Driving to the Station

From either Interstate 81 (exit 118B) or 77 in Virginia take U.S. Rte 460 toward Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. In Giles County take State Rte. 700 or 613 up the mountain (NW) toward the Mountain Lake Resort Hotel. SRs 700 and 613 merge at the top of the mountain at the Hotel. Continue NNE on SR 613 for 1.6 miles (it will turn to gravel past the lake). You will pass through the Hotel grounds and along the west shore of the lake. Take the right fork onto SR 668 - sign to "Biological Station." Take the right fork at the station entrance (brown welcome sign). Park in the large gravel lot near the large barn-like building. Check-in at the office - Lewis Hall 102 (stone building).

Winter Driving Warning

Vehicle access may be difficult or impossible in winter conditions that can start in November and continue into April. Please check the forecast and call ahead before you travel. Four wheel drive is highly recommended.

Flying

Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA) is a 1.25hr drive to the station.
Ground transportation options. Suggestions - Smart Way Bus is only $3 from ROA to Blacksburg; C'artier Limousine 540-982-5466 is $80 from ROA to the station.

Note to Visitors:

  • Mountain Lake Biological Station is a scientific research facility. Visits are by appointment or invitation only. Please call 540-626-7196 or 434-982-5486 or email mlbs@virginia.edu to make visit arrangements.
  • Dogs are not allowed on MLBS grounds at any time, and may not be left in vehicles.
  • All arrivals must register at the Station Office, 102 Lewis Hall.
