Lewis Entrance Improvements Break Ground!,

August 29, 2012

Grants from the University of Virginia Grounds Improvement Fund and Arboretum and Landscape Committee have enabled MLBS to plan and undertake entryway improvements for Lewis’ south entrance.  The project seeks to improve the Station’s grounds and enrich the experiences of the station community and visitors.  A pathway of locally produced flagstone will help guide station guests to the office, settle in for their stay, and become oriented to the station.  The new sitting and working area will be flanked by great rhododendron, flame azalea, and mountain laurel.  Vehicle traffic will be rerouted to reduce congestion and better facilitate loading and unloading from Lewis.  Finally, a new information kiosk will serve the dual purpose of welcoming visitors and concealing utility poles.
