Traditional
RA's: Many research scientists,
generally faculty or graduatestudents, spend the summer at the Station doing
research. They often need research assistants. There are no restrictions to
who may be an assistant and
all
arrangements are made with individual investigators. Some investigators only
provide room-and-board expenses from their research grants; others can also
pay a salary. It is good to contact researchers as soon as possible in the fall
or winter to explore options. You should consider this a "summer job" helping
a field biologist with their research, not as an opportunity for "independent"
research; although some PIs give their assistants a great deal of responsibility
and independence. Contact researchers directly if you are interested in a
research assistantship.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program: For more independent research internship opportunities please consider our REU program. The Station's NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program brings students from around the nation to Mountain Lake for ten weeks of guided, but independent, original research. REU positions pay a stipend and include room, board, and a research allowance.
Other Scholarships and Fellowships that can support work at MLBS: There are a variety of ways to fund your activity at Mountain Lake, for both UVA and non-UVA students.
Our two sister field stations
- Blandy Experimental Farm
and Anheuser Busch Coastal Research
Center may also offer summer research programs for undergraduates.
